Amsterdam’s New Museum of Prostitution
When it comes to overrating a profession, prostitution tops the list. How many of you will venture out to visit the red light district of a city you are visiting? How many cities will have a red light area safe enough for a tourist? Well, the city of Amsterdam begs to differ.
The city of canals will soon be opening a one of its kind “prostitution museum” in the hope to attract tourists and showcase the life of those who make a living on the other side of the brothel door. Sandwiched between two famous brothels overlooking a canal, it will offer something rare, new and very controversial.
What the museum holds for us:
- A glimpse into the world of sex workers — what it feels like to stand behind a window and facing the looks of passing by people.
- A large television screen will show :
- A woman performing a strip-tease.
- A film about the prositutues and their families.
- A short film documenting the lives of people who work with the prostitutes and perform their daily chores like cleaning and cooking.
- A display of the tools of the trade — condoms, lubricants and sex toys.
- At the end of the museum there’s a huge wall of quotes from prostitutes that will surely touch your heart.
- Visitors can even write down their own sexual secrets, anonymously.
It’s a whole different world behind the brothel wall! The famous saying of don’t judge a book by its cover will be truly proved by this initiative.
Sex workers are normal human beings like you and me. Give them the respect that they deserve, even if all it takes is a museum visit!
