Apparently it can! At least in China.
The Guilin Merryland Theme Park, 62 kilometers northeast of Guilin
city in southern China, has launched a summer campaign that encourages
female visitors to “showcase feminine beauty.” The campaign, ‘Love
Miniskirt’, as it has been christened, is a two-month summer campaign
which entitles its female visitors (who are above 18 years) to a
half-price admission if they wear skirts shorter than 38 centimeters.
It sounds appalling to us Indians as women here aren’t even allowed to
wear jeans in certain colleges. But in China, the campaign isn’t a new
feature; the “miniskirt promotion” was first launched in 2007. According to the campaign’s promotional poster, the park is trying to break a record and attract more than 10,000 short-skirted girls.
Of course the campaign has received due criticism where people have
called it a lewd and vulgar publicity stunt. But the statistics seem
to dictate that most people in China seem to be taking the campaign in
a good sense of humour. More and more women line outside the theme
park to get their skirts measured and secure a rather undeserved yet
welcome discount. Also the number of complaints about the campaign has
been decreasing with every passing year.
