Presenting the first four-legged to carry Google’s Trekker camera to capture the Liwa Oasis, a 100-kilometer-wide stretch of desert to the south west of the city of Abu Dhabi:
“Hello there! My scientific name is Camelus dromedaries but you can call me Raffia. I have four legs, a hump and the most gorgeous array of teeth you’ll come across. When Google first approached me, I was a little apprehensive. The Liwa Oasis is, after all, the largest one in the Arabian Peninsula. And I’d to wake up really early. Sigh!
But then I thought that this is something really different, no other four legged creature had ever attempted an undertaking of this magnitude. And when Monica Baz (Google spokeswoman) said to me, “In the case of Liwa we want to capture it in a way so that it can capture imagery in the best, most authentic and least damaging way,” I just had to take up the project.
So me and my helper woke up really one morning, the sunrise is beautiful in the desert you see, and set off across the 100 kilometer-wide scenic desert that is home to some of the world’s largest sand dunes; the Trekker camera mounted on my hump. It was slightly uncomfortable, but hey, I’m going to be the world’s most famous camel now. Well, of course they could have just used a motor vehicle, but I make it authentic?!
Oh and pssssst! let me tell you a little secret: Besides seeing some of my friends, you can also see my shadow!”
Whoever thought camels were so self-obsessed?! But kudos to Raffia for the great job, we now have the Liwa Oasis on Street View.
